Own-it Uni: the free intellectual property advice service for Arts London students
Do you think that someone may have copied your creative work? Are you concerned about how a client can use your designs? Have you been involved in a collaborative project and unsure how the relationship works? Do you need to protect your intellectual property before exhibiting?
ECCA has teamed up with Own-it, the service that offers intellectual property (IP) advice for creative businesses, to offer a free advice service for students at University of the Arts London. Each month, top law firms will visit the university to deliver one-to-one support. This service is run with the support of LawWorks.
To use this service you must be a current student at University of the Arts London and a registered ECCA member. Register your details here. If you are a graduate or existing business, you can access IP-related information and advice from www.own-it.org.

The next IP advice sessions are on 21 July 2008. The deadline to apply to request an IP session for this date is 11 July 2008.
Sessions will take place at the Student Hub, Davies Street, at the following times:
2.00pm, 2.30pm, 3.00pm, 3.30pm, 4.00pm, 4.30pm

How does it work?
If you have an issue that needs legal advice or intervention, then send your request to ECCA (see below). We will then either answer your query online or offer you one free meeting (max 30 minutes) with a lawyer from ECCA's associated intellectual property firms.
Am I eligible?
- You cannot use the Own-it Uni advicesessions for any existing legal claims or for second opinions on any legal intervention already taking place.
- Please not that theOwn-it Uni advice sessionsare for IP related legal advice only.The lawyers will not be able to deal with non-IP related queries or provide related information.
- Please note that theOwn-it Uni advice sessionsare for current students at the University of the Arts London.If you are a graduate or existing business, you can access IP-related information and advice from www.own-it.org
How do I submit my request?
1. Before submitting your query, have a look at the following sources, as they might have the information you need:
- Own-it's 'Doing the Rights Thing' article. Download the document from the right-hand side of the screen.
- Own-it's FAQ section
- Own-it's 'How not to get ripped off DVD' (you need toregister as an ECCA member first)
- Attend an ECCA 'How not to get ripped off' event, run in conjunction with Own-it. Check our events page to see the next session.
This will save you (and us!) lots of time.
2. If you don't find the information you need from the above sources, then e-mail your query, by the deadline date to info@ecca-london.org titled 'Own-it Uni advice request' with the following information:
- your name, college and course
-subject of your query
-details of the advice you require
-attach any documentation or images that support your query (max 5 attachments no larger than 2MB each)
3. If your query is eligible to see an IP lawyer, you will be allocated a time slot on a first come, first served basis between 2 and 5pm on the above date.You will be informed of this within 7 days of the deadline date.Before e-mailing your query, you must ensure that you are available at any time between 2 and 5pm.
4. If your query is eligible but all slots have been allocated, you will be added to the waiting list, and a slot offered for the next available date.
IF YOU DO NOT TURN UP FOR A SESSION THAT YOU HAVE BOOKED, YOU WILL NO LONGER BE ELIGIBLE TO USE THIS SERVICE.
