Enterprise Week is a programme of practical and inspirational talks and workshops, specifically geared towards helping University of the Arts London students make money out of their creative talents. It is part of National Enterprise Week, a national celebration to inspire young people to turn their ideas into reality.

Dates: Monday 13 - Friday 17 November 2006.

Venues: we are scheduling a diverse programme of events across LCF, CSM, LCC and Chelsea. Please scroll down for the full programme.

Cost & availability: All events will be free and are open to all current UAL students, with the exception of the LCF Graduate Fair, which is only open to LCF graduates.

APPLYING FOR FUNDING/SPONSORSHIP

If you are applying for funding for a creative project or business it's vital to make the right impression with your application. You may only get one chance to get it right. This seminar will take you through the dos and don'ts of making applications to funding and sponsorship bodies.

The seminar will be led by Brigid Howarth. Brigid has worked with creative practices in the UK for thirteen years. Recent projects include managing a programme of interventions by artists and product designers in museum collections in Manchester (Nesta funded); and consulting on regeneration potential for creative industries in the Thames Gateway programme.

HOW TO APPROACH BUYERS

Have you got a great product, but don't know how to get it into the shops so people can buy it? This seminar will help you understand how to approach buyers and sell your work as effectively as possible.

The session will cover:

  • Turning ideas into products
  • Manufacturing options
  • Being seen
  • Trade shows
  • Buyers - how to talk to them & what they look for

Sasha Bruce is director of Buyerlogical, and has 10 years' experience in the wholesale and retail industry. She has lived and breathed product and supply chain for the duration of her career. Her proven commercial success at Debenhams as Senior Buyer on Gifts was achieved through excellent relationship building and motivating those around her.

LIFE IN A GARRETT? MAKING MONEY AS A FINE ARTIST

Is it possible to make a living as a fine artist? How do you go about it? Ellie Rees will give hints and tips on doing so.

Ellie Rees is an ex-St Martins (BA) and Winchester (MA) graduate, who works as a video artist and in education. Ellie exhibits in UK and internationally: group shows include ICA, Ormeau Baths, Belfast and Crawford Municipal, Cork. Solo shows include Barcelona and two in Manchester. She works increasingly in opera (video stills) and commissions include Greek National Opera, English National Opera and Buxton; she has also done commissions for Art Review and Harvey Nichols. She has also been artist-in-residence at London Metropolitan University and Giessen University, Germany.

CREATIVE WAYS OF WORKING

This event aims to look at different ways of working as a creative person. The guest speakers have developed innovative and creative ways of working, developing teams and managing a wide range of projects and clients. Each speaker will explain the models they have developed, the challenges they face and their own particular journeys and experiences.

The guest speakers are:

Raw Nerve is a design collective based in Deptford, London. At their core is a management team who bring together specialists in brand strategy, graphic design, digital media, animation, music and film. Members of the Raw Nerve collective move effortlessly from one platform to another, working as bespoke teams to provide clients with relevant, creative and intelligent ideas and responses. They never prescribe their house style – they don't have one! Recent clients include: K Swiss; Diesel; Starch Music; Umbro; and Disco Sucks.

Leigh Clarke was born in Carshalton in 1973. He studied at Croydon School of Art and Design 1991-93, University of Brighton 1993-96 and the Royal College of Art London 1996-98. He is a Senior Lecturer at the London College of Communication and a Visiting Lecturer at the Royal Academy Schools London. His exhibitions include Self Storage Keith Talent Gallery Royal Academy of Arts London 2004 and a solo exhibition Feedback Vertigo Gallery London 2003. Other projects include numerous performances including collaborations with Bob and Roberta Smith. His curated projects include Stage Fright, a spoken word and music album 2005.

Matthias Megyeri is the Director of Sweet Dreams Security, a design company that takes a fresh approach to security products. He has worked on high profile commissions for clients such as Paul Smith as well as exhibiting at MOMA in New York and Amsterdam with droog ? design. Matthias was also awarded a Creative Pioneer award by NESTA (National Endowment for Science Technology and the Arts)

TAX FOR FREELANCERS

Tax doesn't have to be taxing. Martin McKee from the Inland Revenue, will explain everything you need to know about self-assessment, expenses, and registering your business.

Martin is a business advisor for the HMRC (formally Inland Revenue) Business Support Team. The Business Support Team gives free help, advice and training to new and small businesses, supporting both self-employed (sole trader) and limited companies.

HOW NOT TO GET RIPPED OFF

Being copied and someone else ripping off your creative ideas is a major concern once you start to sell, publicise and promote your creative work. You need to protect your ideas and make sure you know what to do if someone does actually copy what is rightfully yours. Intellectual Property lawyer, Daniel McClean, will explain everything you need to know.

HOW TO GET AHEAD IN ADVERTISING

Laurence Green founding director from top London advertising agency, Fallon, will talk about how he set up the agency and show work. He will cover the trials and tribulations along the way, plus deliver hints and tips for starting your own creative agency.

HOW TO MAKE MONEY AS A PHOTOGRAPHER

Photography is a competitive business. You need more than just your creativity to survive. This lecture will cover how to make money as a freelance photographer, tips on organising portfolios, pricing, how to approach clients/agents/editors/galleries etc.

Gina Glover was born in London, England. She trained in Fine Art at Chelsea School of Art, later obtaining a photography degree at the University of Westminster. She is a co-founder and Director of the Photofusion Photography Centre, London and a freelance photographic artist and lecturer.

CREATIVE TEXTILES

In this seminar our guest speakers will give you an exciting insight into their own particular journeys and careers in printed textiles and fashion.

Ella Doran proves that creativity and commercial acumen can work in synthesis. Held in high regard by both the contemporary UK design community and retailers alike (Ella's kitch coasters were recently listed as Elle Decoration's Top 100 British Iconic Products) she has an enviable commercial client list, successfully working in collaboration with well-known brands, retailers and manufacturers.

Rebecca Earley is a London based textile designer and Senior Research Fellow at the University of the Arts London. She currently produces hand and digitally printed textiles for her own label, undertakes public art projects and commissions. Her recycled scarves won an award at the first Peugeot Design Awards in 1999. From 1999-2001 she worked with scientists and other designers at the Eden Project in Cornwall, developing garden designs and educational projects and workshops.
