a collector's point of view
How do collectors decide what to buy? Fine Art Collectors Richard Greer and Maxine Leslau talked about their reasons for buying fine art and what they look for when they come to degree shows.
1. Be there Both collectors emphasised that they want to have a relationship with the artist and they were unlikely to buy work if they had not met the artist at the show. They thought that this is the biggest mistake manypeople make at their shows.
2. They buy because they love the work Richard and Maxine were keen to say that they are not interested in buying work purely as an investment; they have to love the work, but this was not to say the work should not be challenging.
3. Be professional Get informed about pricing, know your price and what you want, be aware of conditions for display and longevity of work (eg use of organic materials, technical equipment), know about the history of art and don't give up!
