making money - rebecca steiner

Rebecca's top tips

Rebecca Steiner, a jeweller, discussed her proactive approach to getting attention for her work and how she got organised to make the most of the opportunity. Rebecca talked at Making money from your degree show as part of Preparing for your Degree Show week.

1. In advance Before her degree show, Rebecca wrote a press release; it's just as useful to contact local papers aswell as glossies. She invited everyone! She used Facebook to create networks but advised that a handwritten 'Be good to see you' on a standard invite goes a long way.

2. On the day Listen to comments; Rebecca found this was a great opportunity to get to know what was working for her potential customers and why. She got everyone to sign up to her mailing list and kept in touch. She also recommended if someone is interested in a commission give them a realistic 4-6 weeks wait time and ask for 50% fee up front.

3. After the degree show Rebecca used an order form, businesscards that she had collected and her mailing list to get back in touch with interested people asap. She also recommended getting face to face meetings with clients who might want something complicated or bespoke.
