Tips for making a living from your art

Is it possible to make a living as a fine artist?
How do you go about it?
Ellie Rees gives hints and tips on doing so.

Ellie Rees is an ex-St Martins (BA) and Winchester (MA) graduate, who works as a video artist and in education. Ellie exhibits in UK and internationally: group shows include ICA, Ormeau Baths, Belfast and Crawford Municipal, Cork. Solo shows include Barcelona and two in Manchester. She works increasingly in opera (video stills) and commissions include Greek National Opera, English National Opera and Buxton; she has also done commissions for Art Review and Harvey Nichols. She has also been artist-in-residence at London Metropolitan University and Giessen University, Germany.

If you are applying for funding for a creative project or business it's vital to make the right impression with your application. You may only get one chance to get it right. This seminar will take you through the dos and don'ts of making applications to funding and sponsorship bodies.

The seminar was led by Brigid Howarth. Brigid has worked with creative practices in the UK for thirteen years. Recent projects include managing a programme of interventions by artists and product designers in museum collections in Manchester (Nesta funded); and consulting on regeneration potential for creative industries in the Thames Gateway programme.
